Rose

After eating, I start to head upstairs to return to the room where I met Lisa and Brock, but a Hispanic doctor hurries toward me. I'm shocked to see someone else from Earth, especially a man, until I recall Lisa saying other doctors worked here.

“Are you Rose by any chance?” he asks in a rush.

“Yes, I am. You must be…” I wrack my brain. “Enrique? Right? Lisa told me your name and the name of the other doctor.”

“Yes, I’m Enrique. Do you think you can help out today with us? Marc and I have been going nonstop for over a year with only a few trips back to Earth to see friends here and there. Marc’s going to have another visit coming up soon, and I would love for you to be brought up to speed so you can help me out.”

“Sure, of course. Non-stop you said? I didn’t think that would be the case. The Novans—”

"Don't get sick, but they're doing a lot of dangerous work to build up this planet. There are almost always cuts or head injuries. They have hard bones, and when one breaks, it's not pleasant. Not only that, they've been harvesting some herbs, and we've been trying to test them to learn what their properties are."

“For pain medication and numbing agents?”

“That’s what we’re hoping it does.” He grins. “Lisa said you’ll be a good fit for the team.”

“Oh, I don’t plan on staying.”

“Yeah, a lot of people say that and then end up changing their minds.”

“Not me,” I say firmly.

“Do you have a husband back on Earth?”

“No. Nothing like that. I just have an obligation to go back. You all have been just fine without another doctor here, but on Earth, it’s hard yet. The towns especially are having a hard time rebuilding by themselves. I never would’ve thought it would take so long for everything to get back to rights, but the Grots hit us so hard all over the place. I will have a bigger impact back on Earth. I’m sure of it. Oh! Not that you and Marc aren’t making a difference here. You both and Lisa and Megan, right? Megan’s the surgeon? All of you are going a great job here.”

Enrique laughs. “You don’t have to be worried. I’m not slighted that you want to go back to Earth. I just am wondering why you didn’t try to find a doctor on Earth to tutor you.”

“I thought about that,” I say slowly. “I know I could’ve, but those doctors are making a difference. There are too many who need help, and I don’t want to take up those doctors’ time. Not that you all have time on your hands, but…”

“I understand. Now, come on. Let’s introduce you to Marc, and we can get started.”

Back down on the ground level, Enrique brings me to Marc. They’re both nice enough, but there’s no time for small talk because a Novan stumbles through the front doors. Blue blood gushes from a wound to the side of his head.
